GAVC welders seal 24 spots at state event

For welding, 24 GAVC students qualified for the state competition. Typically, that is about the number of students that qualify for state. However, SKILLS USA allowed an additional five students from other schools to attend state as a result of the GAVC welding students placing one through 24 in the qualification round.

The novel friction-stir welding technique uses frictional heating and forging pressure to produce high-strength bonds (virtually free of defects, according to NASA) on the longitudinal welds that join panels on the liquid oxygen tank, located in the forward position, and the liquid hydrogen tank, in the aft position. Together with the intertank, which joins the two, they form the 153.8-foot-high space shuttle external fuel tank.
